Faraway’s Quiet Shenandoah May Window
There is a specific moment in the Virginia mountains, right around the second week of May, where the world feels suspended. The frantic energy of early spring, the budding trees and the rushing snowmelt has settled into a deep, vibrant green. The humidity that defines a Mid-Atlantic summer is still “far away,” get it?
Right now at Faraway, the mornings are misty and cool.
It hangs low over the valley floor, obscuring the peaks of the Blue Ridge until the sun gets high enough to burn it off. It’s the kind of weather that demands a slow start. You wake up in a king-sized bed, look through the panoramic window of your dome, and realize there is absolutely no reason to rush, except when it’s time to brew some coffee.
The River and the Ridge
While many visitors head straight for the Skyline Drive overlooks, May is actually the best time to get down to the water. The South Fork of the Shenandoah River is at its most inviting right now. It’s high enough for a steady float but calm enough for a quiet afternoon of fly fishing.
If you do head into the National Park, skip the crowded trailheads. Look out for fire roads and the lesser-known hollows. In May, the forest floor is a literal carpet of ferns and trillium. It feels less like a tourist destination and more like a private estate, which is exactly how we want Faraway to feel.
Anticipation: The Next Chapter
We’ve spent the last few months planning, dreaming, and finalizing the blueprints. There’s a quiet electricity on the property right now because we know what’s coming.
In June, we plan to break ground on our new 24-foot luxury domes. These will be our most ambitious units yet, larger footprints, expansive views, jacuzzi, and that intentional design language that defines the Faraway experience.
If you’ve been looking for a weekend of total, uninterrupted stillness, May is your window. Once the crews arrive in June to begin construction on the expansion, the property will be buzzing with the energy of growth. It’s an exciting time, so make sure to stop by to enjoy the mountain silence.
May in Luray, A Local’s Perspective
Temperature: Expect 70s during the day and a crisp 50 at night. It is officially "fire pit season."
Local Cuisine: The local asparagus and rhubarb are hitting the menus in downtown Luray. Stop by the local markets before checking in to stock your dome’s kitchenette.
Sunrise and Sunset: Sunset sets around 8:00 PM. The "golden hour" hits our domes at a slant that makes the entire valley look like a Dutch landscape painting.
Basecamp is Ready
Luxury isn't about gold leaf or velvet ropes. In the Shenandoah, luxury is 50 private acres, a climate-controlled dome, and the ability to hear nothing but the wind in the oaks.
Our May and June calendar has a few remaining mid-week openings and one final weekend. Come see the valley in its prime before the summer rush begins.
